Babst, Calland, Clements and Zomnir, P.C. is a regional law firm based in downtown Pittsburgh with branch offices in State College, PA and Sewell, NJ (outside of Philadelphia). The firm has niche experience and delivers quality legal services to corporations, closely-held businesses and municipalities. The firm embraces a philosophy of outstanding client service and an “in the trenches" approach, with many of our attorneys having industry or corporate backgrounds in their particular practice area.Formed in 1986 with seven attorneys, BCCZ began as a boutique firm focusing on environmental regulatory law. BCCZ attorneys were in on the ground level of several of today’s most well known environmental programs such as RCRA and CERCLA. As the environmental practice took off, the firm added complementary practice areas to better serve clients. The Litigation Services and Business Services Groups were first to be formalized. The Employment and Labor Services Group was the next addition to the firm. This group filled a need to assist clients with employment, labor and human resources issues. A few years later, the firm developed a Debtor/Creditor Rights Group. BCCZ currently has lawyers listed in Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, who has listed BCCZ’s environmental practice as the best in Pennsylvania, along with several environmental lawyers receiving recognition as being among the best in the state. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, BCCZ focuses on market conditions to identify opportunities to better serve clients, spinning off several businesses in the process. Recognizing the savings that could be generated for clients as states moved to deregulate the supply of natural gas and electricity to businesses, Babst Calland formed Strategic Energy, Ltd. (now a business unit of Direct Energy). While no longer affiliated with BCCZ, the former Strategic Energy is a Pittsburgh success story and has grown into a company that has approximately $1.3 billion in annual revenues. BCCZ also started a company called Solvaire Technologies, L.P. Solvaire builds customized document management systems, helping businesses analyze, manage and image their paper documents. With this focus on outstanding client service, BCCZ recruits and retains bright and involved people. Our attorneys participate in pro bono projects and in many community organizations.
